We are looking for an experienced General Manager to join our growing business. Reporting to the Managing Director (MD) from our head office in Totnes, your role in a nutshell will be:
Direct line management of our four nursery managers – this means indirectly leading a team of over 50 individuals across our four nurseries in Dartington, Dartmouth, Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton. In this aspect of your role, you will work in partnership with our Quality Assurance Manager who focuses on raising standards with regards to Ofsted and other sector-specific regulations
Delivery of our growth plans – you will be the link between our nurseries and leadership team. Your role is essential in the delivery of our growth plans, which include opening a fifth nursery in 2021
Senior leader – you will be part of our leadership team comprised of Managing Director, Finance Manager and Marketing Manager
Business services – you will be responsible for human resources, business operations and procurement. Our Human Resources and Operations administrators will report to you.
In summary, you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of our nurseries, while also working closely with the leadership team to develop and deliver our strategy.
This is a varied and challenging opportunity. Alongside the commercial responsibilities, you will need to develop your team, nurturing talent to enable our growth, whilst ensuring that business systems and processes continuously improve as we scale.
- Leading and providing managerial support to our team of four Nursery Managers to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and that any non-compliances are quickly and accurately identified and resolved.
- Lead our Human Resources function, which currently consists of an HR Administrator, to deliver HR processes and instil our company ethos; deliver a company-wide learning & development programme.
- Manage nursery staffing to ensure compliance with Ofsted regulations while also delivering against budgets.
Manage nursery procurement (food, learning materials and other resources) to ensure our teams have the correct equipment and resources to deliver a quality learning experience.
- Provide regular reporting against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to the leadership team and board of directors.
- Being a point of escalation for customer queries.

Leadership – you have run large teams (e.g. 20 person plus) and been a ‘manager of managers’.
Scaling – you have previously scaled a business from a position of leadership.
Note: while experience in our sector is a plus, it is not essential as the General Manager role will work closely with our Managing Director, Quality Assurance Manager and Nursery Managers who have decades of childcare experience.
Commercial awareness – you know how to negotiate and can deliver against budgets.
Financially literate – you are at ease interpreting financial statements.
People skills – you are a natural coach and mentor, with a toolkit of learning and development techniques.
