Operations Officer

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Humpty Dumpty Childcare Ltd (hdc) for a permanent Operations Officer to join our team. This role is focused on delivering Facilities, Health and Safety and Human Resources functions across the organisation which will directly contribute to the delivery of the highest quality of standards of safety, care, and education.

Salary: £Competitive / Negotiation DOE                         Location: Totnes / South Hams - travel between our nurseries is essential


Your three strategic objectives in this role will be to:

1. Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements associated with nursery facilities

2. Drive Health & Safety (H&S) monitoring and reporting across the organisation

3. Deliver the Human Resources (HR) function for the business


hdc currently operates 4 nurseries, providing a service for more than 250 families in around South Devon. Our philosophy at hdc is to provide families with a caring, stimulating, and educational environment from 3 months’ old to the end of preschool. We believe each child is unique, and we encourage them to learn at their own pace. Young children have a natural desire to learn, explore and question, at hdc we strive to capture their individual interests and use this to personalise their learning.

Brief summary of main duties:

Create, develop, and implement operational processes across the functions of H&S, HR and facilities to reduce the time impact on our operational nursery teams thereby contributing to our ability to deliver an “Outstanding” service to our families.

Compliance and Facilities:
Responsible for the delivery and ongoing maintenance of the nursery’s infrastructure – including learning environment (inside & outside).

Ensure the timely completion of all actions, contributing to our ongoing compliance status.

Manage delegated budgets in order to deliver your objectives.
Build alliances and partnerships with other internal teams and external organisations and manage relationships of existing partners.

Health and Safety:
Ensure all health and safety, security and other sector-specific regulations are followed across the four nurseries.

Ensure implementation of policies and procedures through monitoring and delivering in house training to staff at all levels.

Accountable for the daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly audit schedule and its completion.

Provide weekly updates to Nursery Mangers on open actions and upcoming tasks / inspections.

Human Resources:
Provide timely management information to the Leadership Team to enable coherent, effective and efficient decision making.

Provide weekly updates to the nursery leadership teams relating to open actions across the three functions for which you are responsible.

Ensure a rapid, engaging and differentiated candidate experience for potential new staff.

Maintenance of all staff records and documents.

Person Specification:
Demonstrable experience of adapting to change with the ability to prioritise appropriately.

Comfortable with being reactive and confident in making quick decisions when dealing with the unexpected, calmly and in giving appropriate guidance to others.

Professional curiosity with an eye for detail and tenacious focus on identifying root cause.

Operational knowledge of HR, H&S and Facilities Management.

Authentic communication and people leadership, allowing you to establish, build and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people.

A desire to deliver positive organisational outcomes within set operating parameters.

We recognise this is a broad role covering multiple business functions. We are looking for a person who can operate at scale and with pace, with a clear capacity to prioritise and execute tasks based on operational need. You will enjoy switching from administrative tasks to strategic planning and delivery. External legal / HR advice from a legal services practice

External H&S advice, providing:

Software platform for documentation, monitoring and reporting

Multiple site visits throughout the year from a qualified advisor

24/7 advice line as needed and a local representative

Software platform for the effective management of the HR function

External IT support to minimise disruption from downtime
